Apellidos

Apellido = surname (say “apay-yeedo”).  It is similar to el francés: Cómo tu t’appelle?  = What is your name?  My name is Ruth = Je m’appelle Ruth, in French, from what I remember all those years ago en la escuela.

In the Spanish speaking world la gente tiene, people have dos 2 apellidos.  Funciona like this:  Yo soy María.  Mi madre es Soraya Mendoza Mejilla (“meh-hee-ya”).  Mi padre es José Guzman Herrera.  Yo soy María Guzman Mendoza.  I get el primer apellido de mi padre primero, and el primer apellido de mi madre segundo.  ¿Entiendes?  You understand?

If Pedro Gener Hernandez and Demetria Devore Lovato have hijos together, and follow tradition con los apellidos, what would be the full names de su hijo Jorge (“hor-hey”), y de su hija Magdalena?

Pues = well, as in the conversation filler, the time buyer, the “I’m making a noise because I haven’t yet formado mis palabras but I still want it to be my turn to speak”: pues …

Pues sus nombres, completos con apellidos would be Jorge Gener Hernandez, and Magdalena Gener Hernandez.  Is that what you thought?  Incidentally, las mujeres (= women or wives, say “moo-hair-es”) no cambian sus apellidos when they get married.  Los apellidos de las mujeres disappear en el sistema inglés y en el sistema latino, but it takes one more generation for it to happen en el sistema latino.
