¿Is Spanglish el lenguaje del futuro en Los Estados Unidos?

El porcentaje de U.S. Latinos que hablan español en casa is falling, y los que hablan inglés is growing.  Fernando Hurtado writing for NBCLX asks, ¿could Spanglish one day overtake español as the second most spoken lenguaje en Los Estados Unidos de América?

Spanglish is used across la cultura popular, from Jennifer Lopez to el carácter animado, Peter Griffin de Family Guy.  “Spanglish es un fenómeno importante,” dice Ilan Stavans, profesor de la cultura Latina at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Spanglish es la combinación de español e inglés that singer and rapper Pitbull is famoso for, but Spanglish speakers and Spanish learners can also use something called “calques.”  Calques are words or phrases borrowed from another lenguaje.  Por ejemplo, “te llamo pa’ atrás” is a calque because it is a direct translation of “I will call you back,” una frase que no se usa en español.

El profesor Ilan Stavans piensa que Spanglish will become more and more well establecido.  The Pew Research Center did a survey en 2009 (dos mil nueve) and found that 70% (setenta por ciento) de jóvenes latinos en the U.S. said they spoke Spanglish.  These young people are entering media, la política y el mundo de negocios, business.

“I have dreams in Spanglish.  I think in Spanglish.  Es un estilo de vida,” singer, songwriter y actriz Becky G told NBCLX.  Check out her work, por ejemplo “Sin Pijama” on YouTube, with lyrics such as, “Espero tu call, vente dame el gol.”  I’m waiting for you call, come give me the goal.  Becky G says using Spanglish she felt more confident y más cómoda.  These are the exact same reasons that I use Spanglish as a way to teach Spanish: to engender la confianza and comfort using español para comunicar.

Becky hosts a podcast with Amazon Music called “En la Sala with Becky G,” in which she code switched between español e inglés.  Los títulos de los episodios fully embrace Spanglish con nombres como “Healing la salud mental,” and “Your vote, Tu Voz with Kamala Harris and America Ferrera.”

Yo soy profesora y yo he usado Spanglish for years, to give estudiantes exposure to español that they find easier to understand por la presencia de un poco de inglés.  La cultura in Spanglish of the United States is growing parallel to mi trabajo.  For estudiantes, I think this might be a rich source of learning materiales, and is certainly worth checking out.
