Tres little words

There are 3 tres words that are realmente importantes en esta sección.  Ready?  ¡Vamos! … Let’s go!

Pero = but

Con = with

Y /ee/= and

These words are usado con mucha frecuencia, and it is worth the trouble of learning them.  Get a pen and highlight or underline every ejemplo of pero, y, con en el texto opposite.  That will help you focus in on the words and store them in your memoria.

You might visitar un restaurante to eat, pero en españa es común to order several small platos called tapas, y tapas are normalmente served en bares, con vino or beer, cerveza.

As you will have notado, mucho español es very similar a inglés y easy to learn, pero there is a lot that is very diferente too,  y es necesario memorizar the words that are diferentes.

Sticking con el tema de tapas, there are ejemplos that are easy to guess, like sardinas, ensalada, y olivas, pero you can only learn words like gambas (prawns) y queso /kay-so/ (cheese) con un poco de effort.

One more thing.  Qu en inglés makes a /kw/ sound, pero en español Qu makes a /k/ sound.  Always.  So a kiosk is un quiosco /ki-os-co/, chemistry (we should write “kemistry” for how we say it) is química /ki-mi-ca/, y queso, meaning cheese, is always /kay-so/ with a /k/ sound.
