Lesson 7: Él se llama Alexander

Yo me llamo Ruth is I’m called Ruth.  If you want to cambiar la persona, por ejemplo, if you want to hablar about un hombre, a man, say, “Él se llama Bob.”  = He is called Bob.  Yo me … cambia a él se …  Dos little cambios.

Si quieres hablar about, o introducir a una mujer: “Ella se llama Barbara.” = She is called Barbara.  Él es un hombre; ella es una mujer.

Double LL makes a “y” sonido.  Es obvio with all los ejemplos, como, yo me llamo Ruth and ella se llama Babs, but it’s worth the trouble to state the obvio.  Vale la pena.

Did you realise el verbo ha cambiado as well?  Yo me llamo Ruth con -o al final.  Él se llama Bob, con -a al final.  Estos pequeños cambios son muy complicados, ¿entiendes?  These little changes are muy complicados.

Mi sugerencia es que tu practiques con los nombres de personas en tu vida.  Escribe una lista de los nombres en tu familia y de tus amigos o heroes.

Luego practica saying las frases.  It’s better if you can imaginar un poco de contexto, to make it feel más real por tu cerebro.  This will help your memoria.

Por ejemplo, What’s that comedian who does The Daily Show called?  Él se llama Trevor Noah.

O más personal, ¿cómo se llama tu mamá? I forgot her nombre and I’m meeting her about la reunión del comité.  (Ella se llama Elsie).

Maybe you know some twins, gemelos … like Gemini.  Could you imaginar una foto de los gemelos and imaginar yourself telling someone, él se llama Baz y él se llama Philip.

Ahora is a great word.  Hora = hour or time.  Ahora = now. Ahora es hora de historia = now it’s story time.  See how much you can comprender.

More than 2000 years ago, there was un hombre que se llamaba Alexander.  He wanted to conquistar a country que se llama Grecia hoy en día, and he did conquer it.

La historia is about un día, when Alexander appeared before los líderes de Grecia who all greeted him warmly with lots of compliments (halagos en español, no me gusta la palabra).  All excepto uno, un filósofo llamado Diogenes.

Él tenía opiniones como Budda.  He had given away todos sus posesiones and ahora he was sitting in la Plaza Mayor where he lived, tan libre e independiente como un stray dog, un perro de la calle.

Alexander walked up to him resplandeciente in his shining armour.  Dijo a Diogenes, “Me gustas.  I like you.  Tell me tu deseo and I will grant your wish.”

Diogenes had been tomando el sol, enjoying the warmth of the sunshine, dijo, “Sí, tengo un deseo, Señor.”  “Bien, tell me what it is.”  “Your shadow, tu sombra has fallen over me: stand un poco menos entre yo y el sol.”

Alexander was so impresionado que dijo, “If I wasn’t Alexander, me gustaría ser Diogenes.”

La palabra historia can mean history or story.  There isn’t una gran diferencia in the meanings en inglés anyway, although you may disagree.

I took this historia from E.H.Gombrich’s maravilloso libro que se llama “A little history of the world.”  Lo recomiendo.
