En español there are several diferente words to translate the inglés word YOU. If it is una persona that we are talking to, not un grupo, then there are dos opciones.
You already might know ¿Y tú? means And you?
- ¿Cómo te llamas? = What are you called?
- Me llamo Ruth, ¿y tú? = I am called Ruth, and you?
- ¿Qué tal? = How are you?
- Muy bien, ¿y tú? = Very well, and you?
So you might already know that TÚ = you.
Yo mencioné que there are dos opciones. La otra opción es USTED. You can be either TÚ or USTED.
Reconozco, I recognise, reconozco que este causa un poco de confusión. No importa. Don’t worry.
Tú simplemente es informal, and usted es formal.
Generalmente, if you are talking to someone who is older than you, use USTED. You use usted when you would use Señor Morales rather than Juan.
- ¿Qué tal?
- Muy bien. ¿Y usted?
If you would use el nombre Juan, rather than el apellido then on those first name terms use TÚ.
Here’s some ejemplos that I hope you can entender:
- Hola, me llamo Señora Garcia, ¿y usted?
- Hola. Me llamo Señor Mendoza, mucho gusto.
Mucho gusto means pleased to meet you!
- Hola Señor Mendoza. ¿Qué tal?
- Muy bien, gracias. ¿Y usted?
- Bien, bien.
We use USTED when we tend to use the surname, el apellido, and we use TÚ when we tend to use the first name, el nombre. So there is not so mucha confusión. No es muy complicado.
I like = me gusta.
Me gusta investigar las orígenes of words y frases un poco. Usted comes from an old frase en español, SU MERCED, that means your grace, perhaps slightly grovelling. Imagino that if la serie de la televisión, Blackadder, had been español then it would have been full of la frase su merced.
Su merced evolucionó into one word, usted. Usted is used all over the Spanish speaking world, el mundo hispanohablante. There are slight diferencias en la cultura as you travel from España to México, from Ecuador y Colombia to the hispanohablante partes de Texas. En España tú es un poco más común. En Colombia usted es más usado.
What should you say? My advice is to comunicar con las personas. If you have any dudas, doubts, ask if they prefieren tú or usted. If you don’t feel you can ask just usar usted. And por favor, don’t worry that there are these diferencias entre inglés y español: after all, they are lenguajes diferentes y las diferencias are what make us think and what helps our cerebros to grow.
